The 411 on Drain Maintenance

Drains are possibly one of the most overlooked systems in any building. They are out of sight, which means out of mind - until there is an issue. The easiest way to avoid having to deal with a huge mess and paying hundreds is by performing regular drain maintenance.

Plumbing Systems

Before we get into discussing drain maintenance, let’s cover drain layout. Every building has a “tree trunk” which is one major line that leaves the facility. All small lines are connected to and empty into the tree trunk. This includes the bathroom, kitchen, etc.

Areas that cause the most problems is any area a pipe takes a turn. This is because debris accumulates in the bend, which leads to buildup, blockages, and clogs. This is why preventatively taking care of your drains is highly suggested. Additionally, if you are experiencing slow drains, odors coming from your drains, and drain flies then you need to up your drain maintenance game!

Cooking Grease

While it may make your food taste amazing, cooking grease should never be poured down a kitchen drain. When grease is poured down a drain and cooled, it hardens and may completely block the system. The buildup and blockage will not only affect the kitchen sink but drains throughout the entire building. In other words, pouring grease down your drain is not a good idea. Instead, pour the grease into a mason jar, coffee can, or another container, wait for it to cool, then throw it away in the garbage.

Other helpful tips to avoid buildup in a kitchen sink are:

  • Dispose of fibrous vegetables and fruits, like broccoli stems and carrot peels, in compost or garbage
  • Don’t let tea bags and egg shells slip down the drain
  • Pasta and rice may be hard to pass down the drain. If you can’t dispose of it in the trash, make sure the food is washed down with water to flush the pipes

In short, never put food or materials that do not decompose down your kitchen sink, or any sink! And lastly, give your kitchen drain some TLC once a week or biweekly. Our NeuAction Probiotic Drain Maintainer contains enzymes that target and break down greases, fats, oils, and much more. It’s the perfect product to prevent grease build-up in a kitchen drain or garbage disposal. It also leaves behind a pleasant mint fragrance, eliminating any foul odors. Just pour the instructed amount down the drain and let it sit so the enzymes can go to work.

Soap Scum

We have all seen soap scum in a bathroom before, most likely in bathtubs and showers. But, you may not have known that it also appears in your pipes and drains. Soap scum is a white, solid residue that forms when soap is mixed with water that contains minerals, AKA hard water. Over time, soap scum can build up causing a blockage in the pipes. It can also attract mildew and mold which can turn into a health hazard. This could be a huge issue for hotels or other communal shower spaces where lots of soap and body oils are being introduced into the pipes.

If your shower or bathtub drain is moving slowly, hair could be the culprit. Hair in drains causes blockages and even odors. Some businesses that may have these issues are hair salons and animal care facilities. While it is recommended to remove hair from drains immediately, hair always ends up down the drain. This, plus all of the shampoos and other soaps in the pipes, could potentially cause major issues for these businesses.

Get ahead of the soap scum, mildew, mold, and hair by regularly using our Dual Action Foaming Drain Maintainer! The foam expands to break down organic buildup and maintain your drain. Use the suggested amount of product in sink drains, shower drains, and bathtub drains. You will no longer have to worry about soap scum, body oils, or even hair clogging your drains!
